Acupuncture
Evidence-Based Pain and Balance Treatment

What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a traditional treatment method that involves inserting very fine, sterile needles into specific anatomical points on the body. With roots dating back over 2,000 years, this method is a medical practice whose physiological basis has been established by modern research, and whose effectiveness has been recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) for 28 indications.
After the needles are inserted, patients usually experience a deep sense of relaxation. This is a physiological response caused by the release of endorphins and enkephalins.

Evidence-Based Practice Areas
| Indications | Level of Evidence | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chronic lower back pain | High (Cochrane) | Superior to or equivalent to drug therapy |
| Migraine prevention | High (meta-analysis) | It can reduce the frequency of attacks by 50% |
| Neck pain | Medium–High | 6–12 sessions |
| Knee osteoarthritis pain | Medium–High | Can be combined with PRP |
| Chemotherapy-induced nausea | High (Cochrane) | P6 point application |
| Tension-type headache | Middle | A drug-free option |
| Fibromyalgia | Middle | Part of a multidisciplinary approach |
Session Protocol
- Initial consultation: Medical history and evaluation from the perspectives of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western medicine (30–40 min)
- Selection of points: 10–30 points based on the symptom, meridian, and individual response
- Needle insertion and retention: 20–30 minutes; mild electrical stimulation (electroacupuncture) may be added
- Duration of treatment: Most protocols involve 6–12 sessions; up to 20 sessions for chronic conditions
- Maintenance sessions: May be recommended every 4–8 weeks
Electroacupuncture
Electroacupuncture (EA) is a method that enhances traditional acupuncture by applying a low-frequency electrical current to the needles. At a frequency of 2 Hz, the release of β-endorphins and enkephalins is stimulated, while at 100 Hz, the release of dynorphins is stimulated. EA is particularly preferred for chronic pain, neuropathic pain, and muscle spasms.
Contraindications
Acupuncture is not performed on patients with pacemakers, during pregnancy (at certain stages), those with blood clotting disorders, or those with an infection at the injection site. A decision is made following a detailed evaluation.
